2011 World Solo Drumming Championships

The World Solo Drumming Championships were held on October 22, 2011. Amber Stone of Dowco Triumph Street, accompanied by her brother Aaron on pipes went to Glasgow, Scotland to compete in the Juvenile “Section 1” event; for drummers under 13. The week leading up to the event, Aaron was able to attend a week of lessons at the Piping Center, a scholarship he received from the Celtic Arts Foundation Winter School in 2010. The qualifier rounds had two heats, with a total of 37 competitors vying for the top 6 spots in each heat for a chance to compete in the final. Amber’s performance in the qualifier, adjudicated by Alistair Hepburn and Joe Noble, had her in 1st place by both judges.

Amber finished the competition in 6th place overall with judges David Brown Jr and J. MacInnes; a remarkable result for her first trip to the World Solo Drumming Championships!

The World Solo Drumming Championships included 155 snare drummers representing their pipe bands in four different age categories and was remarkably efficient, considering the quantity of drummers and their pipers to get through the events.
