Ten of the top amateur pipers from North America were invited to the
Nicol-Brown Amateur Invitational (www.nicol-brown.org) in the St Andrew's Epicostal Church in Albany, NY on October 8th. Four pipers were invited from the Dowco Triumph Street Pipe Band – Joseph Stewart, Alexander Schiele, Scott Wood and Marshall German. In a record for the event, never before had four players from the same band been invited. Remarkably, all four of these talented pipers placed in the top 5 in at least one event. Piping was adjudicated by Dr. Jack Taylor (Aboyne, Scotland), Bruce Gandy (Halifax, Nova Scotia).
At the conclusion of the event, DTSPB’s Joseph Stewart was crowned the overall winner!
In the Piobaireachd competition, Joseph Stewart won the Robert Nicol-Robert Brown Chalice with "The Red Speckled Bull" , Scott Wood took 3rd with "Catherine’s Lament", and Alexander Schiele 4th with "The King’s Taxes"
In the 6/8 Marches Joseph Stewart won the Donald MacLeod Memorial 6/8 March contest, Alexander Schiele places 2nd, and Marshall German placed 5th.
The March Strathspey & Reel competition Scott Wood won 2nd place with Bonnie Ann, John Roy Stewart and The Little Cascade. Alexander Schiele took 3rd with 93rd Argyll at Modder River, Islay Ball, and Major David Manson, and Joseph Stewart in 4th with Leaving Lunga, Lady Louden and The Brown Haired Maid.
Joseph Stewart won the overall Championship with Alexander Schiele 3rd overall, and
Scott Wood 4th overall while also winning Dress and Deportment. A full list of winners and the prizes they received is available on the Nicol-Brown website.
